2020 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Congratulations to the 2020 Hall of Fame Inductees!

Bob Anderson: Special Education teacher at Roosevelt. On 1956 NCAA champ U of M baseball team. Coached 6 city championship RHS baseball teams. Critical to starting RHS Booster Club in the ‘60s, increasing activities’ funding. Led group obtaining the RHS athletic complex. Critical to starting the RHS Foundation, the golf tournament, and the Hall of Fame. Served on the Foundation Board for 23 years, helping award hundreds of thousands of dollars to classrooms and to student scholarships.

Phillip Bauer: Class of 1979. Known world-wide as a songwriter, singer, impersonator, and author. Toured the world performing tributes to Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, and Kenny Rogers. Published political cartoons nationally. Authored book: The Heavenly Oak. Dedicated his life to helping drug addicts and alcoholics achieve sobriety.

Ronald Faanes: Class of 1959. Biochemist known world-wide as for expertise in treatment and therapies for AIDS, Cancer, and extending knowledge of the DNA code. Served on many professional and community Boards. Received the Spirit of Achievement for 23 years of volunteer service and teaching. Founder of Olde Crabs Hockey Club non-profit, raising over $200,000 for many local charities.

William Hansen; Class of 1973. Served as Senior Biochemist at Prosetta Bioconformatics, working on a cure for cancer and other diseases. Made many biochemical and cell biological contributions at the Walter Laboratory at the University of California, which led to a Lasker Award in 2014. Spent a decade at William Welch Laboratory working on Molecular Chaperone studies. Inspired to find a cure for cancer by the death of his mother when he was only fourteen..

John Hines: Class of 1971. Entertained and educated the public as a Twin Cities star in broadcasting for 47 years. Broadcast at WWTC, and at KSTP (Hubbard Broadcasting), and at WLOL. Moved to K102, remaining there for 17 years, helping it receive an award as Station of the Year from the Country Music Association. Nominated as Radio Personality of the Year more than once. Hosted the 9-12 show on WCCO for nine years until retirement.

Charlotte Jirousek: Class of 1955. Recognized as a researcher, world textile expert, educator, curator, and innovator in the field of textiles and art history. Served in Peace Corps in Turkey, which inspired much of her research and writing. Focused on the history of dress and textile technologies. Professor and Curator at the University of Alabama and at the School of Human Ecology at Cornell

University from 1992-2014. Authored several books and manuscripts on fashion design.

Elwood “Woody Johnson. Class of 1963. Roosevelt Choral Music Teacher 1971-1988. Taught music and stage production for 42 years, 30 years in Minneapolis. Served as Music Coordinator for the MPS Music Department. Received the Minnesota Choral Director of the Year Award. Conductor and Artistic Director of the Twin Cities Master Chorale. Published choral compositions, and authored What is Rock? Taught at both Northwestern and Crown colleges.

G. Patrick Lilja, MD: Class of 1960. One of the first Emergency-Medicine trained physicians in the country. Led emergency medicine statewide through leadership positions in the MN Chapter of Emergency Physicians, MN Department of Health EMS Advisory Committee, and MN Medical Association Emergency Care Committee. Published numerous research articles on Emergency Medicine and served on editorial boards of professional journals.

Sander “Sandy Logan: Class of 1973. Seen as an innovator, prolific lecturer, and tireless advocate for Emergency Medical Service. Served as a full-time paramedic and field-training officer for the American Medical Response Ambulance Service in Portland, Oregon from 1978-2017. Received the Star of Life Award in 2010 from the American Ambulance Association in Washington, DC. Trained over 15,000 people in CPR and Resuscitation. Served as first responder and wilderness first aid responder for 45 years.

Thomas F. Madison: Class of 1953. Served as President of US West, retiring in 1992 after 33 years in the Communications Industry. Worked his way up from lineman installing telephone polls to President/CEO of Northwestern Bell Telephone company. Earned the top spot on the Minneapolis-St Paul Business Journal list of 50 Hardest-Working Board Members. Maintained close contact with Roosevelt High school friends in the Card Club group for over 60 years.

Carolé Tellman Mensing: Class of 1965. Diabetes nurse-specialist. Focused on diabetes education, self-care education and team partnerships. Served as Past President of several professional organizations and both Past Chair and Board Member of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. Received the AADE Distinguished Service Award, and the AADE Life Achievement award in 2019. Edited and authored several professional diabetes education texts.

William Nelson: Class of 1959. Served in over 7 positions in the Corrections System. Director of Correctional Services for the Volunteers of America for 38 years. Received over 25 awards for his work on sex-trafficking and the problem of prostitution. Featured as a visionary in the PBS program The Visionaries. Established the Women’s Recovery Center for women leaving prostitution. Minneapolis Middleweight Boxing Champion.

Timothy Nielson: Class of 1989. Supervising Sound Editor at Lucas Films. Involved in producing the sound effects for over 70 movies. Sound Designer, Supervising Sound Editor, and re-Recording Mixer on some of the highest grossing films of all time. Recorded over 50,000 sounds for his Sound Library. Developed a universal system for the film industry’s categorization of sound effects. Taught master classes and workshops on film sound.

Tom Ohno: Roosevelt Math Teacher. Taught math at Roosevelt for 26 years, and several years at Lincoln Jr. High, and Cretin Derham Hall High School. Coached boys baseball and girls softball and soccer. Received the Asian Pacific Leadership Award in 1996. President of the Japanese American Citizens League. Influenced many students to do amazing things. Seen as a beloved teacher, coach, husband, father, grandfather. Enjoyed golf, photography, gardening, ballroom dancing, travel, music, and cooking.

Duane Ramberg: Class of 1959. Teacher, counselor, and vice-principal, MPS, 1963-1993. Held many athletic titles, including Football All-City, MVP, All-State, and Star Tribune Player of the Week while at RHS. Inducted into the Stout State Athletic Hall of Fame. Held speed skating records in Minnesota; participated in the 1960 Olympic Trials. Volunteered for 47 years at the Minneapolis Zuhrah Shrine. Became “Rumpy,” the Shrine clown for twenty-five years of parades, circuses, and hospital visits to raise money for Shrine Hospital.

Gregory Wicklund: Class of 1977. Worked as Director and Head Tennis Pro at Edina Country Club, and teaching professional at Life Time Fitness. Big Ten Singles Tennis Champion. Ranked first in the USTA Northern singles and doubles four times. Assistant tennis coach at the U of M. Awards included the Northwest Tennis Association Player of the Year, the USTA Frank Voigt Pro of the Year, the USPTA Player of the Year twice, and the Bob Larson Media Excellence Award. At RHS, tennis record was 43 wins to 1 loss.
